Overview
Just over a century after Rolls-Royce coined the name ‘Silver Ghost’ for its originally more prosaically-titled 40/50hp car of 1906 - sold with the tagline of the ‘best car in the world’ - it revived the title in part for its mid-sized model, which sat below the Phantom in the range. Deliveries to the UK and Europe commenced in late-2009, with a long-wheelbase version following in 2011. Although it of course bears the Spirit of Ecstasy badge, the Ghost has heavy input from parent company BMW, sharing its chassis and around 20 per cent of its parts with the 7 Series. Its iDrive user interface will also be immediately familiar to drivers of the German manufacturer’s other products. However, like all other Rolls-Royces, the cars were hand-finished on the production line at Goodwood, Surrey. The 6.6-litre engine fitted was BMW’s first turbocharged V12, and was developed specifically for the Ghost. It produces 563bhp and maximum torque of 780Nm.
